L.A.R.S. Presents: Punk-A-Palloza
Now that the dust has settled on our first Punk-A-Palloza; we can look back on the acts that kept you entertained through out the evening. Our crew arrived a couple of hours in advance to begin the set-up for the nights event. This is when the stage area gets cleared, equipment set up, and if all goes to plan, a cheeky pint before the bands arrive.
Our evening was kicked off by Portsmouth Punks; Watch you Drown. This 3 Piece band were a late comer to our line up following the late unavailability of our previous booking. Although they were later additions they were by no means any lesser of a band. They were the perfect act to open our first punk event and the crowd loved them.
After a little break and some tunes supplied by Metal Meyhem Radio, our second band for the evening was Floating Palace of SIN. This Brighton based band really threw themselves into their performance. The lead singer Kat was definitely not shy when it came to belting out their opening track 'Xena Made Me Gay', a song about... well I think you can guess. The band continued tirelessly through the whole set loving every minute of it.
A sneaky cover of Dolly Partons' 'Jolene' was an interesting addition to the mix but it was nicely 'punked up' to match the rest of the set. The crowd loved singing along to this high tempo rendition and it was strange to see so many punks singing along to such a country classic. The set ended with a song that is fast becoming the song that sums up not only the bands music, but what they stand for as well; 'Drag King Baby'.
Following on from Floating Palace Of SIN were our headline act for the evening; 5 Go Mad. Our second group of Pompey Punks; 5 Go Mad are a 5piece classic punk band. They are a bunch of guys who love the music and love having a laugh together. This is apparent in not only their music but the banter between themselves and the crowd to boot. From the moment they stood up on stage the band were on fire. Their first song filled the room with lyrics of 'where's my jumper' that really wasn't needed as the room was buzzing with people drinking and having a good time, not to mention the sweat comming from their drummer.
The night continued on with banter from the band, a few songs thrown in in between, and of course “Lashings and Lashings of Ginger Beer”. The band was happy and the crown were roaring. The bands drummer Luke 'Wozza' Warren is well known for exposing his bare butt cheeks at their gigs, but for us he went one better. Complaining of a 'sweaty stool' in true 'I don't give a fuck' style, Wozza played through the next few songs in nothing but shoes, socks, and his birthday suit, a sight strange enough to scare off even the 'Punk Police'. I'm just glad we didn't get a literal visualisation of their song 'Drinking and Wanking'.
All three of the bands over the night were fantastic and we thank them for joining us at our first Punk-A-Palooza event. Hopefully you guys enjoyed them too and we hope to see you all again at the Metal Massacre on the 4th of February at The Crown!
